TUSAL - July

This TUSAL marks the end of July... hot, hot July. I hope August brings us some relief in the hot weather, but I think that's wishful thinking, hmm?

There's a top layer of greens now from Mirabilia's Fern. :)

Fancy a Dress, Anyone?

Sorry I've been scarce this week. Work has been getting more hectic and couple with working extra from home at nights, browsing times was almost non-existent. :( I'm still playing catch up on your blogs and emails, but I will get to the bottom of them, by hook or my crook. :D

I loved reading about your stash preferences. How cool is it that some of you have little or no stash, like me, *giggle* and some of you, I've LOVE to live next door to, so I can come and swim in your stash. ;)

Meet Fern... the invisible pixie; notice that her potion wasn't potent enough to hide her legs. LOL!!! She's stitching up pretty quickly, despite the fact that work has been crazy this week. There are quite a bit of blended threads in this design, and those took up quite a bit of my time as they were more fiddly.

Next up, skin.... urgh!!! I hate stitching skin, especially when I have to smooth out jaggedy arms. :)

Random Afternoon Question

Stash..... the one word that can turn us dignified stitchers *snort* into shrieking, giddy, giggling teenagers. ;)

Do you stash and how much stash do you have?

I'm not much of a stasher. I recently discovered that I had more stash than I originally thought, because I was told that "leftover materials from finishes are still stash," and this was said rather gleefully. ;)

Most of my stash consists of gifts from friends and said leftovers. I've been told many, many times that I really should buy stuff I like when they're available because they might become OOP. Good advice.... but I find it hard to get pass the fact that, if I do that, all they will do is sit in a drawer and gather dust. :)

Some "Fern" Time

This weekend was fun. We went to watch Captain America on Saturday and it was great!! If any of you are thinking of going, do!! It was thoroughly enjoyable and try to stay to the end of the titles cos there's a preview for The Avengers movie that'll be out next summer. ;)

When I started Fern, I had done so with the crazy, insane idea of trying to finish her over the weekend. It's a good thing I ignore myself in these moments cos that would have been impossible. ;)

So amidst the movie, chores, puttering, I got this much of her done:

A Present, A Boo Boo, and A Pic

Thanks everyone, for your input about Ivy and Fern. The general consensus it Ancient and we put up both Ancient and Opal on the wall in the closet and Ancient it will be!!! :D

The Present:
I'm extremely hard to shop for. All my family and friends know that, and I've even been told that numerous times in exasperation. ;) I can't help it... I'm picky about what I like, and I don't like having friends and family spend their hard earned money for something that will just sit in a closet.

When Heidi asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year, I told her I don't know but I'll tell her when I thought about it, which turned her into a nagging wife. I shouldn't be surprise, cos that's what I did to her when she wouldn't tell me what she wanted, and SHE shouldn't be surprised, cos she's doing the same to me!!! LOL!!

A week into the nagging, I knew!!!! She is a most amazing artist and I wanted an original from her! No doubts about it. :D I told her I loved animals and my favorite are the lion and the giraffe. This came in the mail yesterday. Isn't he glorious? I'm so in love!!!!! :D

The Boo Boo:
There has been lots of interest in the Ancient fabric I've received from Picture This Plus, and with reason too, it's just gorgeous! I've only ever ordered belfast linen from PTP to date, and I discovered last night, to my horror, that I had mistakenly asked for 32ct lugana this time.

A lot of you have mentioned wanting to make a purchase of Ancient during PTP's July sale... so I wanted to make sure you had this information. For the linen color of Ancient, check out Sabrina. :)

I'm so sorry for the misinformation. That's totally 'duh' of me. I'm just going to blame it on old age and being overworked instead of ditziness. HAHAHA!!!

The Pic:
The 'boo boo' discovery was as a result of Fern's start.
*cue gasp for the ones of you that know I loathe starting*
*cue cheer for the ones that have been trying to talk me into it*
LOL!!! It took me 1.5 hours of pulling floss, cutting fabbie, trying to decide which half of Ancient would look better with her, ironing, scrolling, adjusting before finally being able to put my first stitch in. For those of you who like start, do you love this part of the process?

Here she is after about a couple of hours....

Mirabilia and PTP Layovers

Helloooooo, fellow bloggers!! :D It's Friday and the weekend looms! What plans for the weekend?

Some of you are wondering what the fabbies from PTP are for. Ta-dah!!!! First the easy one...

Mermaid of Atlantis on Lagoon

Now comes the harder part. Initially, I was all set to stitch Ivy on Ancient, and Fern on Opal. But now I can't decide. I would like to have them on the same wall in our closet, and it would be nice for them to be on the same fabric, more cohesive. I still, however, prefer Ivy on Ancient, and Fern on Opal... but could be swayed, in either direction. ;)

If I stitch them on the same color fabric, this would mean I won't have to cut up 2 pieces of fat quarter, and can save the other piece for something bigger, or another 2 pixies.... but let's not get into more plans yet. LOL!!!

So, if I can pick your brains a bit....
1. Which combo(s) do you prefer?
2. Do you think it odd to have them in close proximity and on such different fabrics?

Ivy on Ancient (L); Ivy on Opal (R)

Fern on Ancient (L); Fern on Opal (R)

A mish-mash of stuff

Firstly, Nina and, recently, Anne were kind enough to award me a Stylish Blogger Award. It consists of a few rules:
1. Thank the person who has awarded you.
2. List seven things about yourself.
3. Pass the award to 15 other stylish bloggers.
It would be tough for me to pass the award to just 15 people.... so instead, I'd like to be a rebel and give the award to everyone on my blog roll and invite you guys to check them out. You won't regret it. I'm also constantly adding blogs to it as I find new ones to stalk read. ;)

Next up.... 7 things about me:
1. I'm from Malaysia and came here for Uni, with the full intention of returning home after my studies... then I met hubby. LOL!

2. I love food and I can eat A LOT! Fortunately, I'm not into sweets nor junk food (I don't consider potato chips junk btw, LOL!)

3. Sometimes I torture myself by browsing through Malaysian food sites with my cousin, and we dream and drool and lament the fact that we can't get good Malaysian food here.

4. Green is my favorite color. It makes me so happy.

5. I have a BMus in Piano Pedagogy and a MMus is Piano Performance.

6. A perfect day for me would be spent at home, stitching, with hubby either gaming on the computer or watching some WW2 movie/documentary on tv.

7. Oh... this is important enough to warrant a spot here... I hate the heat. Really, really hate the heat.

Secondly, my fabbies for my 3 planned Miras arrived today from Picture This Plus and they are pretty!!!

Belfast Opalescent "Ancient"

Belfast Opalescent "Lagoon" - this is much lighter than in my layover,
but I was forewarned, and I'm so please with the teal green and browns in it.

Belfast Opalescent "Opal"

Lastly, I mentioned in a previous post that I am unable to reply to some of your comments via email. When I try to reply, I get this email address: "noreply-comment@blogger.com". Some googling later, I discovered that this message pops up when no email address is listed in the user's profile. If you're interested in having an email listed for bloggers to answer your comments directly:
3. Enter your email address under the IDENTITY section. Lots of people use a different email address from their main one for just this purpose alone.

Random Afternoon Question

I've had such a busy day that I totally forgot today is Random Afternoon Question day. I quick message to Brenda, my partner in crime *mwa-hahaha*, yielded this question...

Do you stitch Halloween pieces? If so, what is your favorite design?

I like looking at them, but I don't stitch them as Halloween is not my kind of "holiday."

On a sidenote, thanks for all your comments. I love reading them. :D I get email notifications from Blogger, but some of your emails are not listed and as I result, I'm unable to reply directly.

Regal Tiger

Hi fellow hermitters!! How was your IHSW? I hope you had some time to cuddle up with your thread and needle, and I can't wait to check out your blogs!!!! :D

I didn't get as much done this weekend as I did the last time. We babysat my cousin's 2 year old on Saturday, while mommy and daddy had a date with Harry Potter and dinner. He's so cute! The baby, not Potter.... LOL!!

I mentioned last week that I was having the hardest time getting into the groove with Tiger. I don't know if it's stitching on aida, or the threads, or the huge size 24 needle. Whatever it/they might be, it's gone, gone, gone... and we're a'cruisin' along. :D Don't you just love his eye??? And it's not even backstitched yet!

I'm going to list all the Hermitters' blog addresses in this post. This way, no navigation to and from the older post is necessary. Let the eye candy and drooling begin!!

Happy Hermitting Everyone

It's soooo exciting to have more than 30 of us who will be hermitting and stitching this weekend. I can't wait to see your progress next week and I'll try to have something decent to show as well. The Tiger is really kicking my butt.

It's still not to late to drop your name and JOIN US for this month's IHSW. :D

Random Afternoon Question

First and foremost, I would like to say hi and welcome to my new followers. I'm glad you found me so that I can, in turn, stalk enjoy your blogs. :D

Thanks everyone for your comments and ideas and thoughts, and keeping me company through my crazy and sane moments. I think the stitching community online is such an awesome group and I've enjoyed every moment of reading your blogs and getting to know you all.

Ok... well, that's enough sentimentality... you'd think I was saying 'Good-bye' or something, LOL!!!

Today's question comes around quite often, especially around me:

What do you think of backstitching? Love it?... hate it?... and why?

I always say I hate backstitching. It's a very blanket statement for me. Backstitching? Hate it!!! I've even gotten to the point that I don't stitch certain things when there's a lot of backstitching involved.

Lately though, I've spent a little bit more time thinking it out. What is it about backstitching that I profess to hate?

I love the look of it. It has the ability to make the stitched piece pop and when done well, gives such a nice 3d effect.

I don't mind stitching the lines per se. Like the crosses and specialty stitches, it's one stitch down, one stitch up and it builds and builds into something beautiful.

Then... *ding, ding, ding!!!* it's the way they're charted!!! I HATE reading the lines and having to pay such close attention to where the stitches has to go. You see, I stitch like I read. I look at the pattern in 'chunks' as in I remember how many Xs and rows of the current color I need to do and then I stitch it, whilst referring back to the chart here and then to make sure I'm on the right track. But I can't do that with backstitching.... noooooo..... it's a constant looking back and forth from chart to fabric, making sure I'm counting correctly. If I wanted to do that, I'd watch a badminton or tennis match. ;)

So, yeah.... I still hate backstitching. ;)

IHSW - July

I can't believe we're coming up for another weekend of International Hermit and Stitch Weekend already!!! I thought I'd post the sign up list a little earlier in the week this month so that more stitchers will have a chance to take part. :D

IHSW takes place every 3rd weekend of each month, for us to squirrel some time away for ourselves and "Hermit and Stitch." You can stitch as much or as little as your time permits, on anything you like, and on Monday of the following week, we post a progress picture and check out each others' blogs (all the links will be listed below). :D

Please feel free to post about this on your blogs.... the more the merrier. :D

I won't be able to spend as much time on this month's IHSW as we have to babysit on Saturday, but I'll try and get as much done on Tiger as possible.

Weekend Stitching

My weekend time with Tiger Regal did not go as planned. I did less than 1 floss length on Friday night and found it really hard to get into the groove.

Saturday was better. I caught up on a lot of TV shows and managed to put some stitches in but when I decided to take a break and grab a shower, I discovered that somehow I gave myself a crick in my neck!!!! Can you guys believe that??? So, needless to say, there was no more stitching for the night, and we ended up playing a game on the iPad.

Sunday? Rinse and repeat. My neck is still twinging today, but hopefully this week will see more progress.

Goodies from Anne!!

I came home from my massage last night to a fat package from Anne, filled with lots of goodies! Thanks to Lucy, I had won Anne's first giveaway, which's shining start is her first biscornu. :D It's just beautiful!! She also sent me some DMC (WHEEE!!), fabrics and ribbons (I'm going to have to think up something good to use those for) and a packet of Oh Canada flavored tea by David's Tea. It's red rooibos "sweetened with maple syrup and sprinkled with delicious maple leaf candies." I'm sitting here typing this and drinking a cup... yum!! :D

Spring Knotgarden - Part 3

All done with Part 3 of Spring Knotgarden (minus beads). :) This is the most blackwork I've done up to date, and I'm still trying to decide if I like stitching them. I LOVE the effect which is why I'm always tempted to do a blackwork piece, but I don't think I enjoy the process. It reminds me too much of backstitching, LOL!

Since I'm all caught up with my Chatelaine classes (WHEEEE!!!!), and the Mirabilia stuff are in the mail, I put Regal Tiger back on the scroll frame. :D We'll see how much of a dent I can make on him.

July 6, 2011

Random Afternoon Question

My friend, June, asked me about embroidery scissors the other day and I'm going to steal her question. ;)

What scissors do you use for stitching? How many pairs of scissors do you own and do you have a favorite pair?

Mine are Gingher's gold handle embroidery scissors and I love them to death. It's so sharp and well made that I use it exclusively. I have another pair from a friend, with a stork handle, but I've only used it once.

Chinese Garden Mandala - Pt. 4

Ms. Mojo decided that she missed me too much and came home yesterday. ;) So, we cuddled up for some lovin' and are happy to present the view through the East Moongate to the Great Wall of China. :D

Mirabilia Stitchy Plans

My mojo has taken a vacation. Apparently it felt that it was around too often during Petal Fairy and needs a vacation. Can you guys believe that???!!

I've taken the last few days to catch up on some tv shows,  re-read a book, a plan some future Mirabilias. ;) I must've done countless layovers for Mermaid of Atlantis. She was a really difficult one to place. I loved her on the browns, but was reminded that no Mermaid lives on land. *pout* So, back to the blues and greens I went.

Over the span of a week, I kept coming back to PTP's Lagoon. It was something that caught hubby's and my attention during the first set of layovers, but I was a little hesitant about the depth of the fabric color. However, Vanessa tells me that the color saturation won't be quite as heavy, and I've decided to go with our initial draw to this fabbie. I love how she looks like she's part of the scene instead of being place on after the fact, which was the case with all the other fabrics. I'm also hoping that the piece I get with have a lighter shading at a corner as well. We shall see. :) I'll be stitching her on opalescent as I want the feel of sunlight glittering on the water around her.

I'll also be stitching 2 of the Couture pixies, Fern as previously mentioned, and Ivy.

Fabric: PTP's Opal

Fabric: PTP's Ancient

Since I don't stash, everything is on order. :) And no... I will not be serial starting them all. LOL!!! I don't think my heart will be able to handle that. This makes my inner serial planner super happy, and maybe between Chatelaine parts, it will make the finisher in me ecstatic. In the meantime, I hope to keep you guys entertained with more WIPs.

And if that darn Ms. Mojo would cut her vacation short, I might have a Chinese Garden picture soon...

July's TUSAL and What's Next

This month's TUSAL added a layer of pinks, yellow and browns from Petal Fairy. :) If you'd like to join in the TUSAL-ly fun for the 2nd half of the year, hop on over to Daffycat's blog to see what it's all about. :)

I don't think Mermaid of Atlantis is happening anytime soon, due to the fact that I can't find the perfect fabric for her, so she might have to stew for a bit. Meantime, I've been roped into a Mirabilia pixie SAL. ;) Looks like first up for me is Fern, stitched on PTP's Opal. Look at all those yummy greens!!! :D She won't be an immediate start either as I need to order the fabric.

This weekend, I have Pt. 4 of Chinese Garden and Pt. 3 of Spring Knotgarden to work on... would be interesting to see how much would actually get done since I haven't made one stitch since finishing Petal Fairy. LOL.
