Friday Randomness

Hi everyone!!! It's almost the weekend!!! Looks like it's going to be a trip down memory lane today...

Thank you, everyone, SO much for your compliments about my orchids. I'm happy to be able to share them with you and hope to keep doing so for many years to come.

My love for orchids stem from memories of growing up surrounded by them. My dad loves them, and when we were little, he had them all over the front porch. I remember the happy yellows of the dancing ladies (oncidium), the purples of the dendrobiumns and phalaenopsises, the bright colors of the cattalyas, and most of all my dad... with his clay pots of various sizes.

This cattalya was almost as big as me!!

All through my years of school here, I've wanted orchids, but I know they needed time and care. So, I was patient and finally when hubby and I bought our place, I knew the time was right. Still, I patiently waited till my parents visited and we went shopping!! My parents, sweet things that they are, spent hours with me at Lowe's and Home Depot. We must have been quite the sight, sitting there on the patio chairs, moving orchids around, studying the leaves and the roots, then getting up and walking to a distance to look back at them... LOL!!!

These were the two they picked out bout 3 years ago:

And these are the same two during last's years blooming season!! :D

When my parents visited last year, they bought me two new phaelopnosis... the white ones I've ALWAYS wanted but never got around to buying and a yellow one...

This was how my babies (the four my parents parents bought me and some others that I bought in between their visits) looked in March last year when they were fully in bloom. I have them in our south facing enclosed balcony where they get morning sun in the wintertime and no sun at all during the summer. They love it!!!

To this day, seeing an orchid reminds me of my dad and home. Is it any wonder why I love them so? :)

Joyce, what a happy, happy story! And OMG what a cutie pie and Dad's very handsome! Thanks for sharing part of your life with us. Hmmm, south facing winter, no sun summer? I might be able to do that - just have to figure a way to keep the critters out of them.

Wow, your orchids are so beautiful! But I guess you grew up learning all about caring for them. It's nice to have such a connection to your dad. Even though he is far away physically, he is always close through your orchids.

And how cute were you?!

Your orchids look amazing on that last pic! beautiful :)
I love orchids since I was a kid but I only got my first one last year and I'm still learning how to take good care of them. Mine is a white phalaenopsis, had 15 flowers and i felt so sad when all fell down =/ now I'm waiting for the new ones to grow :)

What a wonderful legacy for your dad to pass on to you, Joysze. That's awesome, and amazing is how they look. I can't grow them. They bloom once, and then they never bloom again, even with fertilizer. They're just green and do nothing, lol. Thanks for sharing the piccys with us too. YOu were soooooooo cute as a little girl!! Absolutely adorable!

Hi Joysze,

I've only got one orchid (a dendrobium) that is in a terrible state for the moment.
Wish my plant/flower would look like yours!

P.S.: You looked adorable as a little kid ... what happened in the meantime!? LOL!!! Just kidding!

Dear Joyce,

I just found you from one link to another and another... originating at Wild Olive. The orchids are amazing. They are not one of my favorites but I do appreciate them and their unusual beauty. I'm actually a wild daisy kind of girl. Anyhow, have you seen the blue orchids that have been in Walmart and at Costco? These are really different and I thought you would like to know.

Maureen

P.S. Have you ever been to Puerto Rico? In the mountains they have wild orchids growing that are called Poor Man's Orchids. I don't know if that is their real name or not - it's what the college professor called them. Anyway the flowers we found are white and less than the size of a dime. Really tiny and really beautiful.

The orchids are one of my favorite flowers too. I have one in my living room. :)
