Random Afternoon Question

First of all, thank you everyone *hugs* for your comments about Petal Fairy. They so make my day. :D I'm happy to report that I'm 2 colors in on her wings. ;)

Andie and I were talking about obligation stitching (pieces you stitch for friends, families etc that are either requested or you've offered... maybe to regret later, LOL!!) the other day, which led to today's question:

Do you do obligation stitching and if so, how much? Do you enjoy them?

I don't like to do obligation stitching. In a nutshell, I'm selfish and I'd rather be stitching for me, hehehe. Don't get me wrong, I've done plenty of ob stitching, and actually have a few planned this year and I know I will enjoy stitching all of them as they are for loved ones and dear friends. But knowing me.... when I'm working on those, I'll be thinking of the pieces I want to stitch for myself. Then again, my mind is always planning on the next project, so what else is new? ;)

What I've tried to get away from are the "sign-up" ob stitchings. I have a dear friend, Brenda, who is on stand-by duty to yell at me when I'm considering such things. Cos when I do succumb, the poor dear has to hear me moan and groan about it, LOL!!! And it's hard to say no!!! I have such problems doing that.

I am ALWAYS doing obligation stitching. I do like it, but I have found that this last year I am longing for some personal stitching. I almost signed up for another ob stitch yesterday, but talked myself out of it. I am working through the guilt with finishing my OB's. I can't wait for my personal stuff. he he he

I do stitching for my grandmother and my immediately family only... anyone else I say 'oh, I can show you how to make it'. Otherwise I get people expecting me to whip them out a Mirabilia. Non-stitchers have no idea... no idea at all...
But I enjoy making things for my family. Usually. They like weird things!

I do stitch for family, but that are pieces wich i choose myself.
But mostly i like to stitch just for me and sometimes those are given as a birthdaygift if someone really likes it.

Hugs Yvon.
I love stitching for other people! But I only stitch things I actually like, so no Disney!
Nimue's Baby Swing is off to a good friend when I finish it. I love stitching birth and wedding pieces although I haven't stitched my own wedding sampler, my cousin's wife made us a beautiful one.
The worse thing I ever stitched was a photocharted owl for money. Never again!
This year I've stitched - 1 engagement, 2 weddings, 2 births and 1 teacher's sampler (2 to go) as well as the things for myself.

Dearest Joyce,

The only obligation stitching I do is for people who will either not minding waiting or people who don't know I'm stitching something for them until I actually give it to them. Otherwise I stress out and pressures myself to stitch and then all the joy of stitching is gone.

I wouldn't call what I do obligation stitching, more along the lines of just gifting. I stitch what I want for who I want and it's always a surprise so they aren't expecting it. I have never stitched anything that someone asked me to stitch, in fact nobody has ever asked me to stitch (other than DH)something for them. It's not such a big thing in this area, a lot of people don't even know what cross stitching is!

I do stitch a lot for other people, like cards and birthday gifts. But they are usually a surprise presents, so I have the freedom to chose a design that will please both me, since I'll be stitching it, and the person who's going to recieve it! Sometimes I realize that I do more stitching for others, but as it's my choice, I have noone to blame, lol XD

LOL I'm gonna have to start charging you for inspiration :D j/k lol
As you already know I now detest ob stitching, although if there is no timeline then it is fine...... although the piece I started for my Dad when I was pregnant with Miss 8 is still only half done... so maybe its not a good idea! rofl

Guess you could say that I got totally fedup with obstitching: haven't done anyt this year and am not going to either! I hate deadlines and "must" stitching!!! It's so much. More fun to 'just' stitch and see when it's ready. And I've loved this year with my stitches <3

I am always doing obligation stitching. I bring it on myself though. I always sign up for charity quilts and challenges ans such. Also if someone in my family asks for something, I usually make it a priority. So when I finally make something for myself, I feel extra satisfied. =]

I do some obligation stitching. I have a WIP right now (a SAL on Sundays) for my mom. I hate this particular piece with a passion, but still I work on it. It's not really enjoyable, but I'm determined to get it done, so I try. I decided a couple of years ago to not do any more stitching for others (other than mom) because of a gift I gave that has been relegated to the basement, where no one will see it. I was ticked off, and so gave up. I would stitch something else for my brother or mother, because I know they appreciate the time and effort that goes into such gifts. But otherwise, I'm stitching for me!!
If I do obligation stitching I try to help choose the design myself. I know I'd never be able to finish something I hated stitching. I don't do much, although last year I stitched Nora Corbets alphabet fairies for my 4 bridesmaids and a birth sampler for very closse freinds and a griffin for another friend so thats 6 in total. This year I'm yet to do a single one. I'm such a selfish person ;-)

I do stitch for other people (family basically) and only designs that I choose to do for gifts. I like to stitch things I want to stitch, and I do enjoy the joy of this type of gift giving. I would not like to stitch something I did not like.

Sort of. I'm currently doing my first actual obligation stitch where someone has asked me to stitch for them so she can then give it to a friend. However I quite often choose charts or kits with someone else in mind, even if it's not really something that I'd choose to stitch because I'm not keen on chart.
I don't mind doing it as long as it's a design that I like, I'm doing a Bothy as a request at the moment and really enjoying it, and a HAED that I picked knowing I was going to do it for someone, but I did a Clayton piece in the past that I didn't enjoy much because I wasn't a big fan od the resign and I got bored!

I don't do obligation stitching too often. I find that I just loose interest and can't keep stitching.
